It’s been a productive week, I have now drafted 7 of the initial 11 short stories for the first anthology. After a bit of a wobble last week, where I realised that I had been mapping this out for a year, written about half of what I intended and after all that, the output is more clunky than I can adequately describe; (which is an issue for an aspiring writer.) Nevertheless, I persevere and have now mapped the overarching beats for the remaining 4 stories. The collection, as it currently occupies my brainpan serves two critical functions. For me, it is the distillation of the world I am crafting. The rules, the players, the conflicts and the journey I want to portray. It is as much about creating the scaffolding as it is telling the story itself. For the reader (should there ever be any,) it is a glimpse behind the curtain, behind the Veil itself. Hopefully, satisfying enough to want to read more.
So naturally, I am looking at potential collaborators, publishing avenues and ways to share my work. It is a little premature, as I haven’t actually brought anything up to a release standard. But sharing the journey at this stage feels right. If nothing other than for a little validation that this stuff is going to be worth reading.
I feel like this has evolved from a hobby with momentum to a writing project in progress. Which is a subtle but meaningful distinction for me. At least for now.
There was a brilliant post on Substack recently on how there are 11,000 eBooks pushed to KDP everyday. (I think I remember that correctly.) Which is a terrifying statistic. But, undeterred, I soldier on.
Also ran my first Half Marathon yesterday, so it’s been a good start to the week.
